Voice control for home theaters?

Smart home systems are truly game changers for homeowners. The emergence of voice assistants enabled you to talk to your devices, making lives easier by allowing you to control them without lifting your hands.

This goes the same for the devices you use in your personal or family media or home entertainment room.

Although setting up may be complicated for the first time, this little hassle will be compensated with convenience later.

With a few words spoken, you can dim the lights, roll down the blinds, turn your TV on, or play your favorite music, movie, news, or game show without fumbling with the remote or standing up from your chair.

As a movie buff, a sports fan, or someone who doesn’t live without watching the news or TV daily, this level of functionality and convenience is so important.

When you are busy all week, you just have to sit on the couch, turn on the TV, and binge-watch your favorite shows. But how can you really go hands-free and utilize your audio-visual equipment with a voice assistant?

Do you say “Alexa, play Spellbound on Netflix.” right away? Do you say “Google, play Die with a smile on Spotify.” on the spot?

In this article, we’ll show you how to make the most out of your home entertainment system with your chosen voice assistant.

What can voice assistants do for your home entertainment system?

It can be a pretty hassle when you want to watch movies, play music, or games in your home entertainment room and you have to deal with multiple remote controls. Navigating through the menus and the technology can be cumbersome, not to mention that browsing is also time-consuming. You have to manually go through each step of adjusting settings and so on.

With a voice assistant, you don’t have to go through every command like how you usually press one button on a remote control after another.

Communicating with your devices at home was a dream many decades ago. The idea of controlling devices through speech recognition can be traced back to the 1950s [1]. It was nothing like the voice assistant we had today and the progress has been just like any technology we once dreamed of.

Today, there are so many things you can do with a voice assistant:

1. Hands-free control

You only have to speak to your assistant and let it handle for you. Adjust volume, turn on/off a media device, or switch to a different input source. Basically, anything your remote control does.

2. Search and play content.

You can ask the assistant to find trending movies, music, or shows, browse, and let it play them.

3. Control streaming devices.

Streaming device remote control is also a burden. So yeah, you can sit on your couch and ask your assistant to turn your Roku, Firestick, or Chromecast on, browse content, or ask to open an app.

You can say, “ Open YouTube.” Or, ask your assistant to skip or go back to previous episodes.

4. Integrate multiple devices.

The devices within your home entertainment system will collaborate with a few commands.

If you trigger starting a movie night, depending on the command or scene you set, your assistant may dim the light, turn on your soundbar and television, set the thermostat, and launch your streaming app.

You can even command your voice assistant to play your podcasts or music in other speakers in your home.

5. Adjust home theater settings.

Your voice assistant can adjust audio to visual settings with a few commands.

As long as you link your devices to the system, you can adjust volume, lighting, temperature, balance audio, and more.

6. Automate entertainment routines.

Custom routines allow your voice assistant to do multiple tasks in one command.

A simple phrase like “ Good night.” will turn off your TV, speakers, and lights all at once. Or, you can also automate regular routines like playing the news channel at 6 am.

7. Navigate the menu, activate subtitles, or switch languages

No trouble with your remote. You can jump into these settings quickly and adjust your settings in a few words.

8. Recommend content based on your preferences.

Voice assistants can remember and recommend content based on your searches and preferences. Just ask your assistant and it will provide you with choices.

9. Provide real-time entertainment, game, and news updates.

You can stay fully informed without interrupting your movie time.

You can search while having a good time and ask your voice assistant to provide news, game scores, or weather updates while watching your favorite show or a movie.

10. Control lighting, blinds, shades, and ambiance.

So you have installed lighting with the best practices and now what? Luckily, you have a voice assistant to help you control those lights from the rear, bias lighting, accent lights, and more.

That’s much more convenient when you only have to lie down and talk to your assistant.

11. Launch games and applications on compatible consoles.

It’s as easy as that. Open your preferred streaming platform from your smart projector, streaming device, or smart TV without worrying about losing your remote control and by activating your voice assistant.

Launch Netflix, Disney +, Amazon Prime, Spotify, or Hulu by asking your voice assistant.

12. Control media room temperature.

As your voice assistant can communicate entirely with your smart home devices, you can ask it to set a comfortable temperature in your room.

13. Do other tasks beyond entertainment.

Voice assistants have unlimited possibilities. You can multi-task even when watching, without moving out of your chair while watching movies.

Ask your assistant to manage your calendar, set an alarm, shop for clothes, or even order food while you enjoy your favorite show.

What home entertainment devices can you control with AI?

The first thing to remember is to choose a smart ecosystem and pick compatible devices. Some of the smart home systems you can use with your home entertainment are:

  • AVR device
  • Smart projector
  • Smart TVs
  • Streaming devices
  • Smart speakers and soundbars
  • Gaming consoles
  • Smart lighting and plugs
  • Blu Ray Players

A few things to remember

When buying compatible devices, you will be associated with the marketing terms built-in or works with. Here’s what you should know:

  • Built-in. Built-in is when the voice assistant is directly embedded or integrated into the device. You will not need external apps or hubs to activate your voice assistant. The device has its own microphone to command your device. An example of this is a smart soundbar with built-in Alexa or Google Assistant.
  • Works with. A device that works with a voice assistant such as Google and Alexa can recognize commands from an external hub or device with a built-in assistant. They can be products like Google Home or Amazon Echo.

Tips for using voice control for your home entertainment

Now that you have decided to automate your home entertainment system, here’s what you can do to maximize it through your voice assistant.

1. Choose a compatible voice assistant and a smart AI home ecosystem.

You need only one smart home system for your entire home. It can be Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home Kit, Samsung Smart Things, Crestron, or Control4. Ensure that you have compatible devices that recognize your chosen voice assistant.

2. Check for firmware updates.

Firmware updates are crucial to the performance and functionality of your devices and the entire home entertainment system.

Ensure you have the latest version of the devices and voice assistant in your system for a more streamlined operation.

Imagine when you have problems like audio and TV syncing issues, firmware updates can improve device communication, optimize audio processing, and support new features.

3. Choose the most compatible home entertainment devices and link them.

Once you choose a home system, you need devices that are compatible with your chosen device.

Because you will create a network of devices that can talk to each other, particularly your home entertainment system, they must have the same language they can understand.

When you choose Alexa, you must pick AV devices that work with it.

4. Set up voice commands.

Set up clear, concise, and simple voice commands. Choose words that the voice assistant can easily process. Use words like “Play, launch, turn off, set volume to, or stop.”

Avoid overlapping commands that may confuse your assistant. Also, you can set up some settings like Follow-Up (Alexa) or Continued Conversations (Google) mode so you don’t have to repeatedly call your assistant if you have a series of commands.

5. Name devices clearly.

You have many devices in the system. Name them uniquely and simply so your voice assistant can easily understand.

Don’t set names that can be potentially misheard or difficult to catch.

Give your media room a unique name so you can list the devices included in it.

Also, ensure you don’t give devices and groups duplicate names so your voice assistant won’t be confused.

Be specific with your command by stating the device location.

For example, “Alexa, turn on the Media Room Soundbar.” Or “Google, launch Netflix in Living Room TV.”

6. Utilize skills, scenes, and routines.

Skills, scenes, and routines are features that help you optimize and unlock the potential of your voice assistants. You will have to set their configurations on your main smart home app.

Skills serve as a bridge between the external smart home device and your voice assistant. They are plug-ins or applications that help voice assistants communicate with your device. Examples are Netflix, Hulu, Harmony, and Roku.

Scenes are preset configurations in your home entertainment system that allow your devices to work together to engage in a specific activity.

For example, “Movie Time.” will activate specific devices. The scene can dim the lights, turn on your smart soundbar, or 5.1 speaker system, open your TV, roll down the blinds, and set your temperature.

If you activate a scene like “Gaming mode,” it will have a different configuration and set of devices used.

Routines are especially useful if you have regular activities or repetitive tasks done with your smart media devices.

Commands like “Good morning.” can activate devices turn on your TV, launch the news channel, and turn on the thermostat. Routines like “Playtime” can engage your gaming consoles, TV or smart projector, speakers, and lights.

7. Add an AV control system as a skill and list all home theater devices into it for better control.

This is especially helpful for home theater systems. Some systems specialize in controlling the audio and visual equipment.

These systems enhance the viewing experience, and they have been here for decades. The good news is most of them work with voice assistants.

With a separate skill optimized for your AV equipment, you can streamline your home theater setup beyond your voice assistant’s capacity.

These central hubs manage your devices such as gaming consoles, smart projectors, lights, and so on.

AV control systems have advanced setting features, custom macros, multi-room controls, and more.

8. Train your voice assistant to improve voice control.

Your voice assistant has a Voice Match or Voice Training Feature. You’ll have to set up your voice profiles, especially if you use the media room with your family members.

The idea is to help your assistant recognize your voice. So you train it with your voice. Follow the instructions and ensure, your voice is clear and you must speak with your natural voice.

Avoid being too conscious, and ensure a quiet environment so the assistant can pick up your voice clearly. After training, test the commands you set and see if they work.

9. Request movie and show recommendations.

Avoid spending more time browsing shows and movies on your preferred streaming platform. They have thousands of shows in their archives.

What you want is to enjoy your free time, so let your voice assistant do it for you. Amazingly, they store and analyze your preferred shows.

You can have those recommendations shortlisted and request it to play the movie you find interest in.

10. Integrate with other smart home features.

You can control even the smart devices outside your home entertainment room.

From the lighting, multi-room audio speakers, thermostats, smart plugs, power strips, smart cameras, sensors, security systems, smart air purifiers, and humidifiers, you can access them with voice control even if you have been couchbound all day watching movies.

11. Enable voice control for other family members.

You must do this especially if you share the media room with your family members. You can share its capabilities and enhance your overall experience, especially during family time.

The entire system becomes efficient and controlling and doesn’t rely only on one person, making it more streamlined and inclusive.

Also, this can be especially helpful if you have an elderly in the family struggling to use the remote control.

Teaching voice control to your kids will help them become more engaged and responsible in handling the smart devices at home.

Take control of your home entertainment today.

Utilize your voice assistant like its master. Enhance your movie experience according to your taste. With your voice assistant and the right setup and integration, you can take your movie nights to a different level and transform your media into a fully automated entertainment hub.
