Why should you own a mini projector?

Are you actually undecided?

Maybe you’re still finding reasons to own one. How about we give you more?

Ready?

First! You can bring mini projectors anywhere!

Busy people like you always need things right within your reach.

If you find yourself always on the go, you can use mini projectors not only for presentations but for movie camping! You only need a surface to shoot it, and it’s ready!

And you don’t have to be outside to use a mini projector. You can also use it at home.

If you switch movie spaces from the living room to your bedroom, a portable projector can be your streaming buddy.

A mini projector on the table

Set up outdoor movie nights anytime you like!

If you love setting up outdoor movie nights and campfires, having a mini projector is your solution.

You only need a few things in your home, like a white canvas, cloth, a board, or a wall.

Your friends or fam can be only a few texts away! Next time you know, you’ll be doing it every once a week or two!

Next! Explore your wireless options.

It’s time. You can ditch the cords!

Well… Not completely, but possible! Some portable projectors have batteries, so you will not need a plug. And some still use plugs!

Also, you can connect to different devices with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or project movies from your phone on the screen wirelessly.

If you want to enhance your audio, you can take advantage of a wireless surround soundbar kit.

You can enjoy movies and be more practical.

Unless you are a cinephile, you may not have to spend on a high-end projector, especially if you are a casual viewer.

A portable projector is more practical to own.

Some portable projection devices have the basic functionalities found in full-sized projectors, including high-definition projection, built-in Android OS, and wireless connectivities.

Although they are limited, you can get an all-in-one projector with streaming capability at a fraction of the cost! And for a better cinematic experience, try pairing it with an affordable quality two-channel soundbar!

Get a big screen in a small and compact device!

A big screen is what everyone is looking for. Like in the theaters! But you will need one that you can use at or outside your home!

With a mini projector, you can watch a movie with an immersive screen in a compact device.

And lastly! Project to any surface.

TVs are fixed on the wall. Plus, you don’t want your nieces or nephews banging toys on a TV screen, even when you are not watching.

You only need a surface to project! You can even use your white bedsheet from your bunker bed! Much safer, right?

How to select a portable projector?

Nobody knows what to look for in a portable projector if you buy one for the first time. Check these features to look for in a projector.

1. Check the brightness.

Lumen ratings measure the brightness of a screen. A higher lumen rating means you can use a projector with ambient light. And a lower one means you can use it in a darker environment.

Portable projectors usually have lower lumen ratings, which makes them ideal in darker environments. They have lower lumen ratings because of factors like power constraints and heat dissipation due to their size.

So, if you think you will use a portable projector outside and in a darker environment, lumen ratings around 200 to 600 lumens are good enough.

2. See the resolution.

4k resolution requires more processing power.

For this reason, you will seldom see a 4k portable projector, and most portable ones shoot 1080p images.

Nevertheless, 1080p is still decent for a portable projection device.

There are still a few content produced in 4k. If you want assurance, go for a 1080p mini projector with HDR, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision.

3. Take note of the contrast ratio.

Contrast ratios, like resolution and brightness, are critical factors in producing quality images.

For portable projectors, they are smaller in number compared to full-sized projectors.

A 1000:1 is considered decent and will provide deeper blacks and vibrant whites.

4. Determine your preferred screen size.

Mobile projectors can throw starting at 40 inches and still pull off up to 150 large screens.

1080p still produces detailed images at that resolution.

Screen size matters because you’ll have to decide how much space you must provide on the wall, screen, or surface you will project images.

5. What is the light capacity?

Most mini projectors have a lengthy light life. They can even last as the life of the device.

In our database, projector light sources can last from 20,000 hours and more.

By using your projector at least 2.5 hours a day, the can lamps last up to twenty years or more!

6. Know your preferred power sources.

Not all portable projectors are wireless. Some of them still need to be plugged.

(And you still have to charge battery-powered ones.)

They are portable but need outlets. If you have to watch on the patio or balcony, ensure to have dedicated outlets if you choose this type of projector.

If you choose a battery-powered projector, know that most of them project content for up to two hours.

7. List the streaming capability.

Don’t forget to check its streaming features. Some mini projectors run on Android TV. Some of them need a streaming stick.

Or, you can use your phone to mirror content to the screen.

Take advantage of their wireless capability to know the content sources you can play.

8. Take note of the connectivity available.

For portable projectors, there are two crucial ports to own: an HDMI/ eArc, and a USB slot.

If you have both, you can explore wired and wireless connections in streaming content.

A USB slot can connect you to streaming sticks. And an HDMI will help you connect to different sources, such as laptops, Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, and other streaming devices.

9. The Add ons

Aside from the factors above, here are more features you can look into a portable speaker.

  • Supported formats
  • Built-in speakers
  • Auto keystone correction
  • Latency
  • AI capabilities

XGIMI Halo+

Xgimi Halo+ is the true definition of a capable 1080p projector that can showcase Full HD while running on a built-in battery.

I was impressed the upgraded version of Halo portable projector can deliver crystal clear watchable images and accurate out-of-the-box under dimmed lamps or bulb-illuminated outdoor screens.

The LED-powered projector generates 700 lumens, processes 4k content, downscales to 1080p, and delivers like an Ultra-High Definition projector.

Halo+ packs a home theater in one box. It’s all you need to set up a home theater outdoors.

It runs on Android TV and provides access to more content with Chromecast built-in. With Harman Kardon speakers, you’ll experience thunderous rumbling even on movie night camping.

      Most affordable portable projector

      KODAK Luma 350

Kodak Luma 350 is the most affordable portable projector you can get in the 300 price range.

The palm-sized projector can fit into your bag’s pouch. While it could project an 854 x 480 px, you can still cast decent images with 200 ANSI lumens on a screen of up to 150 inches.

Amazingly, the video shoots a vivid display if you adjust it to a 70 to 80-inch screen. It’s far more impressive than other minis in this price range.

I was surprised to find a 720p projector could pack an Android TV 6, and you can even use your phone to control the settings.

It doesn’t have auto-calibration, so you must adjust the screen manually. No worries because the smartphone app or remote control is easy to use.

Portable projector vs a full-sized projector

The differences between a portable projector and a full-sized one depend on their goals.

Mini-projectors will compete against each other for portability and convenience, while full-sized projectors will compete to bring the best image quality and processing technology possible.

        Both serve different markets.

Family watching, projection showing screen with ambient light

But if you are eager to know, here are their differences:

        • Full-sized projectors are, of course, more expensive.
        • Portable projectors are small and pack all the technology in a small housing, which means the technology may be limited.
        • Full-sized projectors cast brighter images.
        • Most full-sized projectors efficiently support 4k resolution.
        • Mini projectors will have fewer inputs.
        • Mini projectors may operate on batteries, making them fully portable.
        • Full-sized projectors offer more adjustment features like keystone correction, lens shift, and motorized zoom.
        • Mini projectors can cast crisp images too, but with limited screen size.
        • Mini projectors are designed for easy connection and disconnection to content.
        • Portable projectors are perfect for a dimmer environment.

It’s easy to know which one is best for you. If you are planning to upgrade and future-proof your home theater, you are probably looking for a fully functional smart home theater projector.
